AARP Mississippi Legislative Update
February 6, 2015

We wanted to provide you with an update of our 2015 legislative activities. AARP Mississippi’s key issue is The Caregiver Act, which would help more than 800,000 Mississippi residents who are caregivers at any time during the year.

Rep. Toby Barker sponsored House Bill 840, and Sen. Terry Burton sponsored Senate Bill 2108. HB 840 was not voted on in the House Public Health and Human Services Committee. We thank Rep. Barker for sponsoring the bill. SB 2108 was passed out of the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee last week. Yesterday, it was passed by the full Senate. Now, the bill goes to the House for a full floor vote.

SB 2108 would give hospital patients an opportunity to designate a caregiver. It also would allow hospitals an opportunity to meet with the caregiver and patient to discuss the plan of care prior to discharge or transfer to another facility. This could reduce hospital re-admissions. Finally, it would provide hospitals an opportunity to instruct the caregiver on how to care for the patient after discharge.

We would appreciate your assistance to get SB 2108 passed in the House. Please call 1-844-288-1080 to be connected to your State Representative. You’ll have an opportunity to leave your Representative a message asking her or him to vote yes on SB 2108.
